Officer named in Cedar Park shooting

Chad Runge, 20, shot and killed following robbery

Cedar Park police said Officer Joseph Christensen was the officer who fatally shot an armed robbery suspect Friday night .

Chad Runge, 20, died behind Bush's Chicken from his wounds around 11 p.m.  Runge is suspected of robbing a nearby Little Caesars, where he was previously employed, while armed.

Police have not released what type of weapon Runge allegedly had, where he was shot or how many times. Police Chief Henry Fluck said the department will not release details in this shooting until after the case is presented to a grand jury.  That could take at least 60 days.

A neighbor who heard shots did shed some light on what occurred.

"I heard pop, pop, pop and that was it," said Diane Waddington, adding that she had no idea those were gunshots and that her neighbor was killed.

"I don't want to comprise the integrity of this investigation or bias it in any way," Fluck said at Saturday press conference at police headquarters.

Christensen, who has been with the department since 2006, was reassigned to desk duty until the investigation wraps up.

The Williamson County District Attorney's Office and the Texas Rangers have launched investigations.

Meanwhile, a the suspect's brother, Justin Runge, spoke exclusively to KXAN Sunday and provided a look at this bother's background.

Chad had dreamed of joining the Army, but a felony conviction dashed the dream.

"I think that's honestly when I think it went to the extreme of being bad. I think he just thought, 'Well I can't join so ... what does it matter?'" Justin Runge said.

Chad was raised by a single mother who worked four jobs to support him.  Justin said they tried to help him turn his life around but he could not stay on the straight and narrow.

Justin believes his brother likely robbed his former employer to try and fit in with a new crowd and hinted he may have been trying to join a gang.

Chad's criminal record shows arrests for drugs, trespassing and unlawful carrying of a weapon.
