Cops: Man fired, officer returned fire

CEDAR PARK, Texas (KXAN) - A man who fired at Cedar Park police officers from his front porch was shot and killed Thursday when the officers shot back, authorities said.

The encounter started around 1 p.m. when a woman inside the man's home called 911 to report a domestic disturbance. According to Cedar Park Police Capt. Jeff Hayes, the woman who called was the man's mother. She told dispatchers that she was concerned and fearful for her life because her son was smashing things in the house.

When officers arrived, the man opened fire on at least two officers who were sent to the 400 block of North Rainbow Bridge Drive, near U.S. 183.

At least six rounds were fired before officers killed the 59-year-old man, who lived with his 79-year-old mother.

According to accounts from neighbors, several police cars were sent in after the shots were fired. Neighbors said it appeared that the man, whose name was not immediately released, was armed with a shotgun.

Police did not confirm the type of weapon involved.

Because an officer fired the fatal shot, Hayes said that the Texas Rangers would handle the investigation.

The last officer-involved shooting in Cedar Park happened on Feb. 25 at a Bush's Chicken on FM 1431.

Chad Runge, 20, was killed, when police responded to an armed robbery in progress at the Little Caesar Pizza restaurant in the 200 Block of Walton Way.
