CEDAR PARK, Texas (KXAN) - Austin Police Assistant Chief Sean Mannix on Friday was named the top law enforcement officer in Cedar Park.

Mannix, a 29-year police professional, will take over for retiring Chief Harry Fluck on Jan. 22.

"I am delighted to have Chief Mannix join us in Cedar Park," said Cedar Park Mayor Matt Powell. "Sean's vast experience in Central Texas police work, when combined with his commitments to both community policing and utilizing technology, make him an ideal leader for our fine police department."

Fluck, who has led the Cendar Park department for the past 12 years, announced in February that he would leave the job at year's end. Mannix was one of two finalists for the job.

“I am excited and honored by the opportunity to lead the fine men and women of the Cedar Park Police Department as we forge partnerships with the city’s residents and businesses to keep Cedar Park one of the safest cities in Texas through community engaged policing,” Mannix said.

Mannix, who holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice and a Master’s degree in Homeland Security,  began his career with the Alameda, Calif., Police Department in 1983 as an officer.  He moved to Austin nine years later and was named assistant chief in 2009.

In Cedar Park, he will lead a department of 80 police officers and more than 30 civilians, and manage an annual budget of $8.5 million.
