ROUND ROCK, Texas (KXAN) - Officers with the Texas Department of Public Safety are investigating an accident that killed a 19-year-old after he was hit by an 18-wheeler Sunday evening.

DPS officials said Todd Aaron Phelan, a student at Cedar Ridge High School, went over the Interstate 35 overpass at State Highway 45 and was then hit by an 18-wheeler while on his way down.

Round Rock Police Department spokeswoman Dee Carver said he died in surgery at Round Rock Hospital.

Meanwhile, the driver of the 18-wheeler stopped to help.

Round Rock police are investigating the incident and are not sure how Phelan went over other than to say he fell off the bridge at I-35.

All southbound lanes of I-35 were closed as police investigated the accident.

Police continue to go through witnesses statements to figure out what happened. Carver said the incident is still classified as an accidental death, while they investigate.

In addition, district officials will have extra counselors on hand Monday at the school.
