LEANDER, Texas (KXAN) - The father of a 4-year-old boy was injured, as was the son, when he crashed into a parked truck while riding on a stand-up-style scooter after he'd had six beers, according to an arrest affidavit.
Charged with injury to a child, Benjamin Vandeveire bonded out of jail on Wednesday.
The crash happened in the 700 block of Honeysuckle Drive on June 10.
Leander police responded to report of a man injured on a wrecked scooter. Police found the man, identified as Vandeveire, with a cut bleeding above his left eye. The man's son was crying and hold his left arm. The reporting officer saw that the boy had a large bruise on his tricep and road rash on the back of his left shoulder. The child was not wearing shoes nor any protective clothing, according to the affidavit.
Vandeveire told police he was riding the scooter with his son standing up in front of him and driving too fast to make the turn when he entered the cul-de-sac. He ran head-first into the rear quarter panel of a parked work truck on the street. He told police that he drank six beers and "was a little bit intoxicated."
The officer conducted a field sobriety test, which Vandeveire failed, according to the affidavit.
Emergency Medical Crews examined the father and son on the scene, took the father to the hospital after he became light-headed. Vandeveire declined treatment once he got to the hospital and left.
