ROUND ROCK, Texas (KXAN) - When the Christmas party starts wrapping up, Tracy Herring and her staff start getting busy collecting old, outdated or unwanted electronics at the city of Round Rock recycling center.

"Computers, TVs -- they can be working, not working. It doesn't matter what size they are. Basically anything with a cord that's an electronic," said Herring, who works with Round Rock's Environmental Services, "Except for appliances we can take every day."

It's a better option than leaving items on the curb, she said. Especially if you're worried about your privacy.

"The computer may hold sensitive information that you don't want going out to the public," said Herring. "This computer will be destroyed by the company that we're using. Also, there's a lot of lead and chemicals in the computer itself, the computer monitors and the TV that we don't want going into the landfills."

Scott Davis and his grandkids made a special trip to the recycling center on Thursday. He said the trip doubled as a lesson in responsibility for the girls.

"To teach them to be environmentally safe," said Davis. "This way, we don't have to, our garbage dumps don't get big."

And it could even be a good time to clean up your drawers too, added Herring.

"The amount of cell phones that we generate on a yearly basis, the computers, every two or three years people update those, to be able to get rid of them so this gives them an option to be able to get rid of those.:

Note:   he recycling center is located at 310 Deepwood Drive in Round Rock. It's open daily from 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. and it's free.
