WILLIAMSON COUNTY, Texas (KXAN) - The husband of a Cedar Park mother of three who disappeared in December 1991 is now indicted on a murder charge in her death, Williamson County officials said Thursday.
Vicki Lynn Nisbett was two weeks short of her 30th birthday when she left her apartment to attend a work-related Christmas party in Austin. Two days later, on Dec. 16, 1991, Rex Allen Nesbitt reported his wife missing.
The couple were going through a divorce at the time, but still living together.
Williamson County district attorney Jana Duty says, "We hope people will come forward. I believe Rex Nisbett killed Vicki but we also have suspicions someone else helped him dispose of the body."
Vicki Nisbett's parents said at the time they suspected foul play because they did not believe their daughter would voluntarily leave without taking her children. They offered a $1,000 for information on their daughter's whereabouts, according to news accounts from the time.
Meanwhile, detectives found traces of blood in the apartment's master bedroom that matched that of the missing woman, and it appeared that someone had attempted to clean it up.
Nearly two months after the disappearance, Nisbett's 1987 Dodge Aries station wagon was found abandoned in a parking lot off MoPac Boulevard in Austin. Police were led to the car by an anonymous caller.
Ken Anderson, the prosecutor in 1992, did not pursue any charges in the case.
Duty asks, "Why wasn't this tried in 1992? It's a good case. We don't have a body and that's a big hurdle to overcome, but it's a strong case."
Williamson County District Attorney said she re-examined the case in February, about a month after taking office, and decided there was enough evidence to pursue charges against Rex Nisbett.
Rex Nesbitt was arrested in Houston where Duty said he was living as a transient with a history of arrests on drug and theft charges.
