GEORGETOWN, Texas (KXAN) - Georgetown officials said fireworks may have sparked a July Fourth brush fire that burned at least 40 acres of grass and brush.
The fire started before midnight Saturday in the 1200 block of Westinghouse Road near County Road 111. Georgetown Fire Department Chief Robert Fite said there were several firework calls in that area, and a truck was seen driving off.
"When people come out to burn fireworks, we see what happens, " said Fite.
The fire chief said four fire departments responded to the early morning blaze, which left many areas vulnerable. Fortunately, two structures nearby escaped the blaze.
Fite said the fire sparked a criminal investigation with Georgetown police, since a fireworks ban had been issued in the days before July 4.
Investigators acquired a license plate number for the truck, and they said they are looking in to leads. Investigators are asking anyone who may have seen something to contact the Georgetown Police Department.
A burn ban remains in effect for the city of Georgetown and the rest of Williamson County.
