GEORGETOWN, Texas (KXAN) - If you're looking to adopt a dog from the City of Georgetown Animal Shelter , you're going to have to wait a few days. That's because the shelter said a significant number of their dogs are experiencing flu-like symptoms.
KXAN News did a report recently about how more veterinarians are seeing the "dog flu" in the Austin-area.
On Monday, the shelter decided to suspend the adoption of dogs, effective immediately.
The affected dogs have been placed into quarantine to make sure the rest of the dog population doesn't get sick.
"Suspending adoptions of dogs allows us to monitor them while we take the steps necessary to get them feeling better," said Jackie Carey, animal services manager.
The Georgetown Animal Shelter had to temporarily suspend dog adoptions in 2009 due to a similar incident.
Cat adoptions will continue since the cats at the shelter are not affected by the illness.
The shelter plans to resume dog adoptions by Dec. 5.
