AUSTIN (KXAN) - A Veterans Day parade in Downtown Austin kicked off at 9 a.m. on the Ann Richards Congress Avenue Bridge in honor of all those that have served the country.
Congress Avenue has reopened after being closed off for an hour and a half Wednesday during the festivities that headed up the avenue toward the south steps of the Capitol. A ceremony honored the families of veterans and active duty military.
"It is a day to reflect on the deeds of these heroes and stand united in gratitude for their service and sacrifice," said Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison.
The senator also mentioned how close Veterans Day came after a national tragedy with military ties.
"This year, our recognition of veterans and troops is tinged with pain as we mourn the tragic loss of life and injuries of some of our bravest at Fort Hood on November 5," said Hutchison. "Their ultimate sacrifice reminds us of how much we owe our men and women in uniform."
The Commemorative Air Force from San Marcos also performed a flyover during the ceremony.
All county, state, and federal offices are closed Wednesday. Only Pflugerville, Georgetown and Bertrum will have their city offices open for Veterans Day.
Pflugerville is the only school district closed for Veterans Day. All other schools and universities will have classes as scheduled.
