AUSTIN (KXAN) - Updates are set to arrive Wednesday on the changes being made at Zilker Park . The City Parks and Recreation Department will give an overview on the progress of the Zilker Park Improvement Project .
One of the more noticeable change is keeping the park green by installing a system that would draw water from Lady Bird Lake to water the fields. The park will remain closed for the next eight months as crews install new turf. Also amid the new projects is the installation of drinking fountains.
However, perhaps the most peculiar project to hit Zilker Park is a three-month archaeological dig scheduled to begin February 2009. The Austin City Council approved $700,000 for the dig in Zilker Park to uncover artifacts such as stone tools left behind by some of North America's earliest hunters and gatherers. The dig is somewhat of a continuation of a preliminary archaeological investigation in 2006 that uncovered nearly 900 flint pieces dated to some 10,000 years ago.
