Twenty Bastop dogs rescued from death

Austin Pets Alive! taking dogs on euthanasia list

AUSTIN (KXAN) - Austin Pets Alive!, a nonprofit organization dedicated to making Austin a “no-kill” city, is rescuing 20 adoption-ready dogs from the euthanasia list at Bastrop County Animal Shelter .

The organization -- which usually exclusively focuses on animals at Town Lake Animal Center -- is reaching out to the Bastrop Animal Shelter to help with its need for assistance from rescue groups. The Bastrop shelter is overwhelmed and will need to euthanize animals immediately if it cannot get others to take the animals.

The Bastrop shelter gets almost no adoptions on-site and heavily relies on rescue groups.

Austin Pets Alive! said this rescue will not curb its ability to pull dogs from TLAC.

“If there are adoptable dogs on the euthanasia list at TLAC, they should get pulled and we will ensure a place for them in our shelter or in our foster homes. We anticipate that most of the dogs from Bastrop will be adopted over the weekend,” said APA! executive director and veterinarian, Dr. Ellen Jefferson.

The dogs from the Bastrop shelter will arrive at the Austin Pets Alive! Adoption and Resource Center at 1:30 p.m. Friday.

The organization will place the dogs up for adoption at its new facility this weekend. It is located at 2807 Manchaca Road.

The majority of animals at Town Lake Animal Center and other area shelters have no serious health problems, according to Austin Pets Alive! officials.

The adoption fee is $100.
