Travel trailer burned with body inside

BASTROP COUNTY, Texas (KXAN) - Bastrop County Sheriff’s Office has a mystery on its hands after a burned travel trailer had a body in it.

The call came around 2:45 a.m. on Thursday. Firefighters arrived to find the trailer in flames. They fought the flames for some time, but there were no hydrants in the area. Firefighters brought in extra water to fight the blaze.

It was not until they started to sift through the torched home that they made a gruesome discovery.

"Once the fire was put out, an unidentified human body was found within the remains of the fire," said Sheriff Terry Pickering, with the Bastrop Sheriff’s Office.

The spot where the trailer was located was surrounded by trees and almost hidden from the road. There was not much left of the home.

Darryl Cook lives less than a mile away and had no idea what happened.

"The friend of mine who lives adjacent to this lot and she said 'it's on the news that there's a fire,'” said Cook. “I'd been outside all morning and I hadn't seen any smoke."

Sheriff Terry Pickering said there are more questions than answers in this case, so far.

"Our next step is to go through the scene, see what we can do to identify the person," said Sheriff Pickering. 

This will not be an easy task, especially since neighbors said the trailer had only been in the rural area a short time.

"I never saw a vehicle, all I saw was a travel trailer," said Cook. "I never saw the person lived there.”

For the next few days investigators will be busy trying to figure out how the fire started in the trailer and who the person is that was inside.
