AUSTIN (KXAN) - DPS is investigating a suspicious package at the state insurance building on 12th and San Jacinto streets just east of the state capitol building.

DPS spokesperson Tele Mange said the suspicious letter was from a prisoner, and filled with white powder. She did not immediately know who the letter was address to, or who it was from, but the Governor's mailroom is in the insurance building.

Officials said situations like this are common at this building, since it houses the main mail room for most state offices. They have to treat each situation seriously as a precaution.

People sometimes fill envelopes with white powder to simulate anthrax, however it is sometimes discovered to be some household item instead.

Several emergency responders are on the scene.

The building was not evacuated because of the suspicious letter.
