AUSTIN - Wednesday the controversial sonogram bill goes before the House Committee on State Affairs for a public hearing. The The Texas State Senate has already passed the controversial sonogram bill, 21 to 10.
The bill would require a sonogram at least two hours before the abortion. The doctor would have to verbally explain the sonogram and let the woman hear the heartbeat.
The bill would also require doctors to give women information about medical assistance benefits for childbirth, as well as adoption options. Planned Parenthood said this sonogram bill hurts the relationship between a doctor and a patient.
Governor Rick Perry declared the bill an "emergency item" during a pro-life rally last month. Senator Dan Patrick of Houston said his intent with the bill wasn't to force a woman to view a sonogram or hear the heartbeat but rather help her make an informed decision.
Since the bill has passed in the Senate it now needs approval in the House.
