Slushy mix for early Friday expected

Cold air mass to keep temps in 30s; Rain chance

AUSTIN (KXAN) - Rarely in Central Texas do we have an opportunity for snow - real snow, the kind that stacks up and let’s you play with it.

Sometimes, we see a slushy rain/snow mix and on a more rare situation, actual snowfal - but it’s limited.

This Friday we expect a very cold air mass to keep our temperatures in the 30s all day, but a decent chance for rain is also on the way. The combination looks to provide us with that slushy rain/snow mix for early Friday and then, it could very likely turn to snow.

Some forecast model data indicates 2 inches of snow, but in some cases, 4 inches is possible.

The Hydrometeorological Prediction Center has also indicated it may have to issue an advisory for the said snow event.

Late Friday night into early Saturday morning, there is a very serious chance our temperatures could dip into the 20s here in the Austin area with some areas in the Texas Hill Country dropping in the teens.

This makes it a “Hard Freeze,” and with Wednesday's expected afternoon sunshine and temperatures in the 50s, it would probably be a good idea to take advantage of the favorable weather and prepare for the cold.

Something to keep in mind: Pets, plants and pipes and more importantly, people. Make sure all are secure and comfortable in the coming cold weather.

Stay tuned to KXAN Austin News for complete coverage as the event unfolds.
