AUSTIN (KXAN) - Repair crews remain at the site of a sinkhole Monday evening caused by a wastewater pipe break last week, which has had a part of Dessau Road shut down for three days.
The 12000 block of Dessau Road has been closed since Friday morning, when a 12-inch wastewater line ruptured and caused damage to the roadway.
Austin Water Utility spokesman Kevin Buchman said the road failed around 10 a.m. Friday due to a failing wastewater line that was installed in the mid-80s.
The southbound lanes of Dessau Road have been closed since Friday, but they will be reopened anytime between 8 p.m. and 10 p.m. Monday.
Instead, the closure will now affect the northbound lanes of the 12000 block of Dessau Road as crews work to find a suitable part of the pipe to slice into.
Meanwhile, traffic on Dessau Road will be reduced to one lane in each direction near the site of the repair, only using the southbound lanes.
AWU officials encourage motorists to avoid the area until repairs are complete and the road is reopened, which is anticipated for Wednesday.
Officials said the wastewater that normally flows through the damaged line is being diverted through other pumping operations.
