AUSTIN (KXAN) - Austin Independent School District police said a student fired shots Monday at a sedan on Stephen F. Austin Drive in front of Austin High School.

The shots were fired at 5:07 p.m. Monday, causing concern for students who may have still been lingering after school was out.

Police said the 17-year-old shooting suspect, who is a student at Austin High School, turned himself in Monday night at the request of family members. He was later identified as Jay David Carbullido, 17.

Investigators with the Austin Police Department spent the evening questioning Carbullido. He was charged with five counts of aggravated assault because five people were in the car at the time of the shooting. No arrest warrants have been issued yet, however.

Police said they believe the suspect got into a verbal argument with a former AISD student who had just picked up three students at the school.

"A weapon was displayed," said Lt. Eric Mendez with the AISD Police Department. "The other party saw the weapon, got in the car to leave and as he left, shots were fired - striking the vehicle."

Bullet holes were scattered across the side of the four-door car. Mendez said the shooter fired a rifle three- to four times toward the vehicle.

The shooting not only took place on school property but just feet away from the Hike and Bike Trail, where dozens of people were enjoying their afternoon workouts.

No injuries were reported.
