AUSTIN (KXAN) - In just weeks the new commuter rail starts moving passengers from Leander to Downtown Austin. However, with more than 40 public crossings, transportation leaders are trying to prevent accidents.
Austin police and officials with Capital Metro warned the public Wednesday about rail safety, on the heels of the official opening of the new MetroRail . Capital Metro has been working with schools along the tracks to make sure the community is aware trains will be running more frequently, faster much quieter, which could lead to tragic consequences if pedestrians and drivers do not stay back.
In addition, there are quiet zones set up along the tracks, meaning it will be difficult to know when the train is coming. However, there are safety gates set up along the more-than-30 mile route span, and Capital Metro said the safety gates are designed to never trap a car on the tracks.
Austin police said people are required to stay at least 15 feet away from the tracks, but the department only plans to give out warnings instead of citations to start off the transition.
"Initially, we're going to give warnings before we start writing citations," said David Knutson, with the Austin Police Department. "It depends on how flagrant the violation is."
Though the rail officially starts transporting passengers March 30, practice runs start Sunday. A one-way trip from Leander to Austin will cost $1.50.
