AUSTIN (KXAN) - A hit-and-run accident in San Marcos has killed a 22-year-old pregnant woman, but doctors were able to save the baby girl she was carrying.

San Marcos police said the accident happened just after 11 p.m. on Tuesday on the access road of Interstate Highway 35 near State Highway 80.

Diann Ford had just finished work at a nearby restaurant and was walking back to her house when she was struck by an unknown driver as she was crossing I-35. Sgt. Christopher Tureaud said Ford was not in a crosswalk at the time of the accident.

Ford was rushed to University Medical Center at Brackenridge in Austin where doctors started treating Ford, who was 37 weeks pregnant, and her unborn daughter.

Doctors delivered Ford’s baby daughter by Caesarian section but Ford died on Thursday morning.

The victim was able to tell police the car that struck her was dark and had extra bright headlights.

The newborn is reported to be in good condition in the pediatric intensive care unit.

Police are looking for any witnesses or anyone who may have information about the hit and run vehicle and driver. Anyone with information is urged to contact Sgt. Christopher Tureaud at 512-754-2214.
