Volunteers on hand for Monday's launch

Austin - Dozens of citizen volunteers are prepared to pitch in next week and assist passengers on CapMetro's new commuter rail line.

The line launches its first day of full service on Monday.

CapMetro is doing what it can to ensure a smooth start to its new rail liine from Leander to Downtown Austin.

When the trains begin to roll Monday, some 60 volunteers - dubbed Transit Ambassadors - will be at all nine stations during the morning and evening rush hours, prepared to assist passengers in any way, including find appropriate bus connections.

"We'll help with bus connections, train tickets, whatever is needed, and we'll do it with a big smile on," said volunteer Betty Saenz.

CapMetro continues to test run the trains in real time, running round-trips during morning and evening rush hours. The estimated time for a trip from one end to the other sits at just a little more than an hour at 62 minutes.

"We've reached the point where everything is all set," said spoeksman Adam Shaivitz. "Everything looks good. The schedules have been reliable."

The Metro rides will be free during its first week. Monthly passes will cost $70 per month, and CapMetro reminds riders that the ticket machines at the Cap Metro rail stations do not make change.
