AUSTIN (AP) - Austin police Wednesday arrested a man identified as Charlie James Sanders, 56, for allegedly assaulting an officer attempting to search Sanders' bag, which contained marijuana.
An APD officer was on duty in the area of 12th Street and Chicon Street at about 4:30 p.m. when he noticed two individuals attempting to hide themselves smoking cigarettes.
The officer approached the two individuals, he smelled the odor of marijuana and searched the pair. While attempting to search Sanders, he allegedly resisted and the officer tried to handcuff him.
According to the arrest warrant, Sanders got into a “fight stance” and attempted to take the officer to the ground as he continued to try and cuff Sanders. The warrant states Sanders allegedly punched the officer multiple times. Eventually Sanders was detained and taken into custody.
Police found 5.39 grams of marijuana in Sanders' bag, according to the affadavit.
Sanders was charged with possession of marijuana and assault of a public servant.
