AUSTIN (KXAN) - Travis County officials said a child who was reported missing has been found dead.
Travis County spokesperson Roger Wade said the 5-year-old was reported missing around 5:30 Saturday morning by a female caretaker from the Shoreline Apartments on the 3500 block of Shoreline Drive.
Police said the caretaker told them she went on an almost two hour search looking for the child before calling police.
Authorities did conduct their own search, but it ended around 10:00 a.m. when dispatched received a call that a child's body was found near Wells Port Drive and Wells Port Cove lying in the grass. Deputies verified the body was that of the missing child.
Investigators are still trying to determine how the child died.
Now, with few answers, residents said they thought their neighborhood was safe.
"That's crazy, I would have never...that is why we moved here because we heard it was a good area to live in," said Renee Carrillo, a resident. "That is crazy. Oh my God!"
"At this point, we want to withhold some of the information so we can make sure what we do have or any tips that we get, we can verify," Wade said.
Wade also told KXAN that residents are not in any danger and should not be worried.
He explained that detectives are conducting more interviews, collecting evidence and that the child's family has been notified.
