AUSTIN (KXAN) - The city of Austin is taking Christmas trees for recycling.
The "Christmas Tree Drop Zone" opened at Zilker Park Sunday morning. It's a chance to recycle your tree right away rather than dump it at a landfill to decompose over time.
The city turns the trees into mulch or Dillo Dirt - and keeps those trees out of the landfill. The city will accept tree drop-offs at Zilker two more times in coming weeks: next weekend, and on January 9.
If you're a Pay-As-You-Throw customer, you can set the tree by the curb for pickup on your collection day.
This is the 25th year for the recycling program.
