AUSTIN (KXAN) - Animal shelters around Austin have been swamped with cats and kittens all needing new homes.
So Saturday, the Austin Humane Society hosted it's first-ever Feline Free Fur All. They waived their usual fees, hoping to encourage people to adopt.
It worked.
Nearly 300 people lined up, and all of the 150 cats and kittens available at the Humane Society have new homes Saturday night.
"It was really moving how the community came out and supported this lifesaving effort and found homes for all these cats and kittens," said Lisa Starr, with the Austin Humane Society. "This allows us to save more cat and kitten lives."
Starr said the cat and kitten population goes up during the summer months, and despite the success of Saturday's event, the Humane Society will have plenty of animals who need new homes by the middle of next week.
