AUSTIN (KXAN) - Police said an Austin teen was racing when he lost control of his car and killed two women while they waited at a bus stop this weekend.
It happened at the 5100 block of South First Street on Saturday at about 7:30 a.m.
In an affidavit, police said Erick Armando Nuncio-Moreno, 19, was doing about 70- to 90 mph on a road where the speed limit is only 35 mph. He is charged with two counts of manslaughter.
Police said he drove up next to another driver in his Toyota Celica at a traffic light at South First Street and Stassney Lane, revved his engine and took off speeding. The other driver told police he did not make eye contact with Nuncio-Moreno, and he refused to race.
Nuncio-Moreno sped down first street and plowed his Toyota Celica into the bus stop killing, Maria Goana DeCorona, 53, and Adriana Morales Catalan, 28. Adriana had just celebrated her 28th birthday the day before.
At the scene on Monday, Michael Powell showed up to add his cross to the memorial of flowers, candles, and a balloon in memory of two women killed. Micheal said the cross stands as a symbol.
"It's really sad," said Michael Powell. "I don't know the people personally but I know it's gotta be tragic for the family members and I'm just trying to do my little part."
Meanwhile, Nuncio-Moreno's family issued a statement this afternoon.
"The family would like to convey wishes of sympathy to the families that have been victim of this tragic loss. Our family would like to express deepest sympathy for their loss. Our heart goes out to them."
Nuncio-Moreno is now at the Travis County Correctional Facility under a $100,000 bond.
