Hwy 71 wreck leaves one person dead

AUSTIN (KXAN) - Austin Police have identified the man killed in a wreck on Hwy 71, near ABIA.

Police say 72-year-old Phillip Ontiveros was killed Sunday afternoon around 3 p.m.

Witnesses tell police a car driving west on Highway 71 ran a red light at the intersection of Thornberry Road. The car hit an SUV and knocked it on its side.

The wreck killed Ontiveros, who was a passenger in the car. The driver was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. 

The people in the SUV were treated at the scene.

The westbound lanes of 71 were shut down for a few hours, while police investigated the scene.
