Instructor, student dead in Llano crash

LLANO (KXAN) - Two Central Texas men – a flight instructor and his student -- are dead in a single engine plane crash that occurred sometime before 3 p.m. just south of the city of Llano.

The Federal Aviation Administration confirmed a single engine plane went down on Saturday afternoon, with a report of two people dead. FAA will be on scene, along with the National Transportation Safety Board, to investigate. The plane went down off Ranch Road 2241, near the Hunger Ranch. Late this evening, the Department of Public Safety confirmed the two victims were flight instructor Scott Belt and student Bobby Luker, Jr.

The Department of Public Safety confirmed the plane was so mangled that it was impossible to confirm what type of plane it was, except it was a single engine plane with two seats. At the time of the crash, the plane was in communication with the Llano Airport tower, completing touch-and-go exercises.

Belt's website, Learn2FlyKerrville, said Belt flew a Cessna 172. He had 30 years of flying experience. Luker, 51, was from Bertram, where he appeared to run a construction company.

The last communication between the plane and the tower was at 11 a.m. The local DPS trooper was notified of the accident around 3:30 p.m. this afternoon.
