Burnet soldier killed in Afghanistan

Army Captain Jason Holbrook died Thursday

BURNET, Texas (KXAN) - Family and friends are mourning the death of a Burnet soldier killed in Afghanistan.

Army Captain Jason Holbrook, 28, died Thursday in Afghanistan.

Holbrook was a special forces team leader, his unit ambushed near the Pakistani Border.

His father, James Holbrook, his mother Elaine and his wife Heather traveled to Dover Air Force Base in Delaware Friday to meet Jason's body.

They returned home late this evening and Jason's remains are expected to be back in Burnet in the next week.

Holbrook deployed to Afghanistan just 15 days ago.  He had previously served with distinction in Iraq.

Among his many honors, he was awarded a Bronze Star, a Purple Heart and a Meritorious Service Medal.

Holbrook's was preparing to celebrate his first wedding anniversary this coming December.

His sister told KXAN Captain Holbrook will be buried on their land in Burnet County.

Funeral plans, however, are still pending.

Holbrook was a 2004 graduated of the United States Military Academy at West Point in 2004.

He is a 2000 graduate of Burnet High School.
