SAN MARCOS, Texas (KXAN) - San Marcos police have identified the victim who died in a collision early Monday with a tractor-trailer truck.

Jeffery David Stevenson, 40, of  Big Spring, Texas died at the scene at about 2 a.m. in the 5600 block of the southbound access road of Interstate Highway 35, just south of Posey Road.

The truck driver stayed on the scene and called police just after it happened. The road was unlit by street lights, police said.

The driver told police he crested the top of a hill and the bicyclist was suddenly in front of him in the center of the right lane. He applied his brakes but was unable to avoid hitting the bicycle.

According to investigators, the bicycle did not have a headlight or rear red reflector required by state law for night time operation of a bicycle.

The victim’s body was taken for an autopsy. Stevenson was carrying no identifying information. Police identified him through fingerprints. Next of kin have been notified.

No charges are expected to be filed against the driver of the truck.
