SAN MARCOS, Texas (KXAN) - A Texas State university student was arrested during a fraternity meeting Tuesday night on charges of manufacturing more than a dozen fake identification cards.
Jake Thomas Waldrep, 20, a sophomore engineering student, is charged with 14 counts of delivery or manufacture of a counterfeit instrument.
Each offense is a third-degree felony punishable between two and 10 years in prison and a fine of up to $10,000. He was released from the Hays County Law Enforcement Center on $10,000 bond.
San Marcos Police Department executed a search warrant at his residence to search for computerized and electronic records of the offenses.
The investigation began more than a month ago when a doorman at one of the bars on the square contacted SMPD Officer Tiffany Williams, assigned to the downtown unit. The doorman told Williams about an individual attempting to use a counterfeit temporary Texas driver’s license to get into bars in the area.Williams located the individual that night.
After a month-long investigation, she identified Waldrep as the suspected creator of the fake ID. With the assistance of Texas State University Sgt. Jason Moreno, numerous other individuals were identified for whom police believe Waldrep had manufactured fraudulent temporary Texas driver’s licenses.
Officers with SMPD and the Texas State Police Department are continuing the investigation.
