Texas State dedicates housing complex

SAN MARCOS, Texas (KXAN) - In order to meet the growing demand for student housing at Texas State University, the San Marcos campus is welcoming students to its newly built Gaillardia and Chautauqua Halls.

The $33 million project is a part of the North Campus Housing Complex.

Students began moving in this week and Texas State officially opened the new buildings with a dedication ceremony on Wednesday.

The North Campus Housing Complex is a 612-bedroom traditional student residence hall that is located on campus near the LBJ Student Center at the corner of Comanche Street and Sessom Drive.

Each hall has 306 spaces with single and double bedrooms available. Both halls take up about 189,000 square feet total.

The project is funded by revenue-bonds, which will be paid back by the students who live in the on-campus housing.

Both halls are built to Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design or LEED standards.

LEED certification provides confirmation that a building, home or community was designed and built using methods aimed at acquiring excellence in areas of human and environmental health, said U.S. Green Building Council.

The halls consist of six floors which each have study and lounge spaces. A two-story community building has a 24-hour reception desk as well as gathering spaces for recreation and social events said Texas State officials.

Gaillardia and Chautauqua Halls are going to cost approximately $3,600 per semester to live in according to Texas State.
