SAN MARCOS, Texas (KXAN) - Maybe there's something to that old saying about how you can't keep a good man down.
On Friday, 83-year-old Bill Carroll finally got his wish to go aloft in a hot-air balloon. It was a flight that the hospice patient saw canceled no fewer than 14 times in recent weeks on account of bad weather.
Over two months ago, Carroll told organizers with the Dream a Dream program that he flew a lot while serving for the armed forces. But he has never had a chance to fly in a balloon.
So they decided to make it happen for the retiree who said he suffers from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, second-stage lung cancer and early-stage dementia.
After he landed from his trip above San Marcos, Carroll was exhilarated.
"I think it was great," he beamed. "I'd like to do it again."
