Hundreds of rattlers invade community

Rattlesnakes are not uncommon in Texas but one Kyle family said it is becoming a huge problem that they don't let their 2-year-old son play outside.

"You're constantly looking down," said homeowner Todd Hand.

Hand, his wife, young son and newborn girl have lived in the Woodlands Park subdivision for six years and said the issue is getting worse.

About four years ago, Hands said the homeowners association has slacked off by not maintaining a nearby detention pond.

"There is cover, perfect for rodents, you see a lot of mice and rabbits around here and the snakes are going to go were the food is," Hand said.

It's so bad that the family installed a glass door so they can see if there are snakes at the doorstep before they walk outside.

Hand has killed 60 snakes by himself but that number would be even higher if counting those killed by his neighbors.

"When the (city) comes and mows, they just mow right here but they have never done anything in the detention pound itself," said Hand.

Part of the vacant lots did fall under city code but the detention pond has obviously been neglected.

City of Kyle officials said there is only so much they can do. They do hold the association accountable for maintaining the pond.

"We talk weekly to the neighborhood association management and they assured us they would get equipment down there when it is dry enough," said Jerry Hendrix, director of Community Development for Kyle.

Hand has already spoke with rattlesnake handlers who said they will be happy to come in and get rid of the snakes' den once the area has been cleaned up.
