Abilene crash kills New Braunfels woman

NEW BRAUNFELS, Texas (KXAN) - Two people, including one person from New Braunfels are dead and five others injured in a two vehicle head-on collision Friday night near Abilene, Texas.

Six people were in a pick-up truck --- all were students at Abilene Christian University.

One passenger in that vehicle, 20-year-old ACU junior advertising and public relations major Lindsey Smith of New Braunfels was killed. Five other students were injured.

The driver of a red pick-up truck was also killed in the crash. Department of Public Safety officials believe he drove through a stop sign on County Road 107 and hit the other vehicle.

All of the injured were taken to area-hospitals. One of them was taken by helicopter.

The driver, Colleen “Callie” Kerbo and passenger Eric Terrazas, were treated and released from Abilene’s Hendrick Medical Center about 1 a.m. Saturday.

Passengers Deanna Romero and Rebekah Cherniss remain in Hendrick’s trauma center, according to hospital officials.

The Optimist, ACU’s student newspaper, reported that the six students were on their way to attend the traditional Grand Ole Oplin country western dance at the Oplin Community Center.

“We are grateful for the support of our campus community in difficult times such as these,” said ACU president Dr. Phil Schubert  (’91) in an email to students, faculty and staff. “Your outpouring of heartfelt expressions of help has been overwhelming tonight.”
