ELGIN, Texas (KXAN) - As one family builds holiday memories, an Elgin tree farm helps bring holiday spirit to soldiers.
Every year Mark and Rosemary Hoffman bring their children Sydney, Emma, Abby and now baby Harrison to Evergreen Farms in Elgin.
The family enjoys finding the perfect Christmas tree. “We come out here every year and pick a tree, cut it down and take it home. The kids just love it,” said Mark Hoffman.
The kids roast marshmallows over an open fire before a tractor ride out into the farm to wander among the trees.
After some excited debate, the girls pick their favorite, and soon Mark has the tree cut and headed for the roof of their minivan.
For many, buying a pre-cut tree close to home is the convenient choice. But the Hoffman’s know this is about creating memories. Memories that will last a lifetime.
“It's so worth it because the kids have such a blast and they remember it from year to year,” said Hoffman. “They wait all year to come cut a tree down. So, it’s great.”
This year, Evergreen Farms is hoping to spread that joy to those serving in the military.
The Trees for Troops Program will be sending thousands of real Christmas trees to the men and women serving in the military. A donation jar sits next to the cash register to help pay for the trees. For a dollar donation, customers can color a sheet and add a holiday message for soldiers at Ft. Hood.
Katy Waltersheidt of Evergreen Farms said, “It’s just to brighten up their day and let them know were thinking about them and we appreciate everything they do for us.”
When it comes to holiday spirit, there’s nothing quite
like a real tree to make it feel like Christmas.
