AUSTIN (KXAN) - An Austin family is celebrating a special Christmas, and they have the community to thank. The Sumpter family's Northeast Austin home on Hyside Drive was destroyed Tuesday after a fire burned their belongings.
But with the help of the community, the Sumpter's six children opened plenty of presents.
"Unspeakable, just tremendous," said Leroy Sumpter, Parent.
The parents are extremely grateful for the support and generosity of the community.
"I had faith already, but now it's stronger than ever before," said Chimere Sumpter, Parent.
The family was devastated after a fire tore through their home, destroying everything including their six children's holiday gifts.
"I had to watch them mourn over the fact that we lost everything," said Chimere Sumpter. "But thanks to God and the community, they changed that."
But with the help of so many in the community, their children did have presents to open Christmas day.
"My kids have gotten more gifts than they have ever gotten in their lives," said Leroy Sumpter. "In all of their years combined, it still doesn't match up to the gifts they've gotten this year."
The Sumpter family wanted to personally thank everyone who helped to make their Christmas a little brighter.
"So many people donated and we don't even know who they are," said Chimere Sumpter. "That alone feels good to know so many people in Austin actually care."
It's a Christmas miracle for a family who has lost so much.
A homeowner offered to let them stay in his empty 3 bedroom home in Lago Vista. He also loaned them a car. A relief fund has been set up for the family at the Security Bank and Trust in Lago Vista.
To help this family, call Tina Schultz with donation questions at (512) 947-1104 or drop off donations of clothing, food, money, toys to 2908 E. 12th Street, Austin, TX 78702.
The American Red Cross of Central Texas also accepts monetary donations at any time. The organization has provided assistance to 18 families that have had their homes damaged or destroyed by fire in December alone.
