AUSTIN (KXAN) - The city is closing a popular disc golf course because it's wrecking the park environment .

The popularity of the Pease Park course along Lamar Boulevard, near Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, has become its downfall.

Park officials said all the foot traffic has damaged Shoal Creek, but the park's disc golfers are unhappy about the decision.

However, they're resigned to the fact that it's going away and said they can understand the need for change.

"It won't really affect us," said disc golfer Ian Hovey. "We will just be missing what a lot of us call home. I mean, human feet has definitely dragged things down."

Park officials are drawing up plans to create a new 18-hole disc golf course at Roy G. Guerro Colorado River Park in East Austin.

A public meeting on those plans is scheduled for June 17.
