AUSTIN (KXAN) - An Austin cyclist died on Tuesday after he was hit by a van as he tried to make a turn on Cameron Road, police said.
Charlie Pink was wearing his bike helmet but died at the scene. Police say he and the Dodge Caravan were traveling in opposite lanes in the 8800 block of Cameron about 9:35 p.m.
Pink tried to make a left turn onto a side street and didn't yield the right of way to the Dodge, police said, and was hit. The driver of the van was not injured.
"It does not appear that alcohol or speed was a factor in this crash," according to a police news release.
Pink was wearing a helmet. It is believed that none of the lights on the bicycle were operational.
No charges are anticipated in this case.
Anyone with information regarding this incident is asked to call APD Vehicular Homicide Unit Detectives at (512) 974-4724. This case remains under investigation.
This is the 21st fatality of 2010. At this time in 2009 there were 36 fatalities in Austin.
