AUSTIN (KXAN) - Testimony originally scheduled to wrap up Wednesday in the case
of a convicted killer suing the state could last into next week. At
the age of 22, Raul Meza was convicted of sexually assaulting and
murdering Kendra Page, 8, in 1982, but he qualified for release in
1993.
Meza's suing the state, because he is still being held in the
Travis County Correctional Facility in Del Valle and said it is
impossible for him to re-enter society. Meza's attorneys are trying
to prove that the rules that are imposed on Meza make it impossible
for him to get a regular full-time job.
Even if Meza were to get a job, his travel route from the
jail would mean he would travel through a child safety zone,
violating the restrictions that are currently placed on him. The
U.S. district judge will have the ultimate say on whether Meza's
restrictions should remain. Meanwhile, Kendra's sister hopes a
decision will come soon.
"If it takes forever, if it takes until 2016 to get this
resolved, we're still going to be here," said Tracy Page.
Wednesday's testimony wrapped up at noon, and testimony will
continue next Monday afternoon before the judge is expected to rule
on a later date.
