Morning wintry mix hits Hill Country

Rain expected throughout Tues., into Wed. morning

AUSTIN (KXAN) - With cold weather in place and showers approaching from the Southwest, we can expect rain throughout Tuesday, into the night and into Wednesday morning.

Click here for our First Warning Weather page.

The big question was if some of it would arrive in a more frozen form - perhaps sleet or even snow. And the Hill Country received its first batch of the frozen wintry mix just after 8 a.m. Tueslday.

The first report of the frozen mix came from a viewer on the Mason-Gillespie County line at Cherry Spring around 8:15 a.m. Meanwhile, Carolyn Loeffler of Mason said it began snowing in her area just five minutes after that.

Phil DeLobbe of Fredericksburg reported a nice snow flurry 11 miles north of Fredericksburg on Highway 87 around 9 a.m.

"It started out as sleet and just turned to huge fluffy snowflakes about 10 minutes ago," said DeLobbe.

"First flakes were huge!" said Loeffler. "Then they settled down into smaller but more frequent flakes."

The wintry weather conditions moved into Travis County around 9:15 a.m. in the Oak Hill area, where Matthew McDermott reported frozen rain, "though nothing is sticking."

Just four minutes later, viewer Debbie Hilliard reported it was sleeting in Williamson County. Hilliard lives just northwest of 620 near Anderson Mill Road and said the sleet was not sticking but rather was turning into water on the ground and surfaces. Hilliard also said it was not continuous.

Another concern would be with anything that did receive rainfall, as the area could encounter some slightly colder temperatures Tuesday night. That could mean some light freezing on elevated roadways, bridges and flyovers.

Once the rain end Wednesday, we will have sunshine and cold weather through the holiday weekend.
