LULING, Texas (KXAN) - During a special meeting Monday night, the Luling school board voted 4-1 on a proposal to terminate coach Jeff Nine's contract.
According to school officials, Nine was “horseplaying” with a 16-year-old student during class and put the child in a headlock on the second day of school.
The boy told police he lost consciousness at one point, and fell to the floor. Officials said a school nurse said the student was fine, and his parents later took him to a hospital emergency room to be certain.
The Luling Superintendent said Nine was starting his second year with the district, but had been teaching for 25 years. Nine was a science teacher and assistant football and baseball coach.
The school board is expected to fire Nine at their regularly scheduled September board meeting.
Nine has the option to request a hearing, or resign from the district before than happens.
