AUSTIN (KXAN) - Mayor Lee Leffingwell and Mayor Pro Tem Mike Martinez announced the "Be the Change" day of service and urged Austinites to become volunteers.
The city leaders partnered with the South Asian Americans Leading Together organization for the Oct. 2 event.
"Be the Change" is inspired by a Mahatma Ganhi quote and the movement started 11 years ago. The program attracts thousands of volunteers nationwide; 300 volunteers are confirmed for the Austin event.
Volunteer opportunties are available with the Capital Area Food Bank , Keep Austin Beautiful , Town Lake Animal Shelter , and the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center .
Projects will take place Oct. 2 between 9 a.m. and noon. There will be a celebration at the Capitol afterwards featuring free food and music. To register online , click here.
