AUSTIN (KXAN) - The new year brings the end of free rides from Capital Metro. Starting Jan. 16, the transit agency is changing fares, expanding MetroRail service and modifying bus routes. The changes are meant to streamline service, after an analysis of ridership patterns.
Linda Watson, Capital Metro's President and CEO said, "We did not reach these decisions lightly; it has taken many months of development and direction from staff, customers, stakeholders and our board. And, we will continue to pursue improvements to meet the needs of our community.”
New Fares:
- Local MetroBus: $1 single-ride/$2 day pass
- Regional Services (MetroExpress and MetroRail): $2.75 per trip/$5.50 day pass
- Groups who previously rode for free will now qualify for a reduced rate, including Seniors 65 and over, people with disabilities and members of the military
MetroRail Service Changes:
- New midday service: hourly trips between Lakeline Station and Downtown Station from 9:20 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
- Adjusted schedule with service beginning at 5:50 a.m. and every peak trip serving all nine stations
- More reverse commute trips
- Rail Connector routes at MKL and Kramer stations will operate throughout the day
MetroBus Service Changes:
- Local Routes: 1M N Lamar/S Congress and 18 MLK, Jr
- Limited & Flyer Routes: 142 Metric Flyer and 174 Burnet Limited
- Feeder Routes: 214 Northwest Flex, 240 Parkfield, and 243 Wells Branch
- Crosstown Routes: 333 William Cannon and 392 Braker
- Express Routes: 985 Leander/Lakeline Direct, 987 Leander/NW Express, and 990 Manor/Elgin Express
