FLATONIA, Texas (KXAN) - A routine traffic stop in Fayette County for an obscured license plate ended with a major heroin bust.

The sheriff's department said the officer stopped a pickup traveling east on Interstate 10 near Flatonia on Thursday and became suspicious about the occupants route from Weslaco, a small town near the Mexico border, to Houston.

According to the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office, three automotive batteries located in the bed of the truck showed signs of tampering. Upon further inspection and taking apart one of the batteries, officers discovered heroin.

Officers confiscated a total of 18 kilograms from the three battery cases, which had an estimated value of $4.2 million.

Pedro Carillo, 56, of Donna, and Ruben Carrillo, 37, of Weslaco, were arrested and charged with possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver.

Bond for each of the men was set at $1 million.
