Bastrop teen heads to dream spot at UT

AUSTIN (KXAN) - It's National Signing Day, and that is one big day for high school athletes in Central Texas -- where hundreds of student athletes will sign letters of intent to play college sports.

One of the nation's top recruits is soon to head to a major player in his backyard, narrowing in on the University of Texas to be a Longhorn.

Antwuan Davis goes to Bastrop High School, and there is no stopping the senior who is committing to his college career.

Antwuan has the speed, strength and -- now -- success story every high school football player could ever dream of.

"I'm ecstatic," he said. "Basically, I'm signing my life away to one college, and here it is. And I can't wait to get to work."

And his family is right there with him.

"I think that being able to get this opportunity to: 1. Get an education and 2. Live your dream out," said his mother, La Sean Hockenhull. "I think is huge, so I think that with him being able to do this, I think it's a great thing for him and our family as well, too."

It's a dream driven by talent first spotted years ago.

"The little kids could not keep up with him," remembers his father, Anthony Davis. "He used to be on the field, and he would score 10 goals. So all the parents would go crazy like, 'Get the guy out the game.' But it wasn't his fault. He was just faster than everybody else."

Now at 17 years old, the  defensive back had Alabama, LSU and a dozen other schools knocking at his door. But he chose to play right in his backyard in Longhorn Country.

"I think Coach Akina was the deciding factor because, I mean, him -- and producing two corner backs in the Super Bowl that played last night -- I mean, what a thing. And one of them did win," said Antwuan.

Years of training, camps, bowl games and sacrifices got him here.

"Working out with my dad gets intense, and so all the guys will be like, 'Twan, I don't know how you do it,'" said Antwuan.

But he did, and it's prepared him for the play of his life.

"I still have a lot more work to do," he said. "I know there's this part. You've got the high school phase. You go the college phase, so if I get passed the college phase, then it's no telling where I can go from there."

Bastrop High School has two other football players participating Wednesday.

Paul Whitmill committed to TCU, and Aneas Henricks committed to UTSA.

And it's not just football. There are two softball players, two soccer players and a tennis player that will sign their letters on intent on Wednesday.
