BASTROP, Texas (KXAN) - Thanksgiving travelers choosing to drive to their holiday destination can be thankful for low gas prices this year.
The state average in Texas is the fourth lowest across the country and 30 cents lower than it was last month, according to gasbuddy.com.
A gas war in Bastrop is helping the price drop.
“Everybody is talking about Buc-ee’s,” said Bastrop native Janice Grohman.
A new Buc-ee’s opened last Wednesday in Bastrop with gas prices less than $3 per gallon. Local gas stations then followed suit by dropping prices to stay competitive.
On Monday, cars lined up to wait on gas that cost just $2.92 at the Bastrop H-E-B.
The Thanksgiving holiday is beginning a little earlier than usual in Central Texas.
Leander, Bastrop and Del Valle are letting their students take the entire week off from classes, and travel at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport was already heavy on Monday due to the combination of Thanksgiving travelers and Formula One fans.
ABIA officials said that nearly 22,000 people were expected to depart on Monday, one of their busiest ever.
