Bastrop County deputy shoots man in arm

BASTROP COUNTY, Texas (KXAN) - A 49-year-old man was hospitalized and released to jail officials after a Bastrop County deputy shot him in the arm.

It happened Monday around 8:20 p.m. following an accident where police said Thomas Carl Brown had run off, leaving the car at the intersection of Greystone Drive and Crafts Prairie Road.

Officers went to the Colo Vista Neighborhood to track down the home where the car was registered, at 104 Swan Court.

Police said Brown came to the front door holding a handgun, and they repeatedly ordered him to put the gun down when he came to open the door. Brown allegedly refused and pointed the gun at one of the officers.

The officer then fired one round, hitting Brown in the left arm. After a struggle, police managed to restrain Brown and give him first aid.

STARFlight took him to University Medical Center Brackenridge , where he was treated for injuries that were not life-threatening.

When authorities released Brown from the hospital, he was booked into the Bastrop County Jail and charged with aggravated assault on a public servant. That is a first-degree felony that carries a sentence of up to life in prison. 

Texas Rangers are investigating this incident, and the officers involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative leave pending further investigation -- which is a normal procedure.

Meanwhile, Brown has previous arrests on charges of driving while intoxicated in 2005 and 2009, and resisting arrest in 2000.
