AUSTIN (KXAN) - Upon approving an $8.6 million incentive package to coax Apple to Austin, the City Council also said yes to a measure that aims to protect construction workers on the expansion.
The move made Thursday means the Workers Defense Project will now negotiate plans with the company to oversee wage, safety, and training issues related to the million-square-foot building that could soon go up across from Apple's current campus in northwest Austin.
"It's really that there should be some community oversight, so workers have someone they can trust as a resource," said WDP's Greg Casar.
The group has been meeting with Apple representatives and plans to finalize the agreement in the coming weeks. WDP said construction is expected to begin in June, though Apple has yet to reveal its final selection of Austin for its expansion.
