AUSTIN, Texas - A Travis County woman on trial in the January 2011 shooting death of a transient has been convicted of murder.
Lou Ann Tompkins was arrested three days after officers responded to a campsite in a wooded area 150 yards south of Winnebago Lane on Jan. 22, 2011. They were responding to a call from man who said he found his friend dead inside of his motor home.
Bell died of a gunshot wound to the forehead.
According to investigators, friends told police Bell didn't know why Tompkins would want to shoot him. They said he would sometimes do things like walk through her campsite at night, light fireworks near her campsite and upset her dogs. Witnesses also told police that Tompkins had printed out a copy of Bell's criminal history at the library and wanted to know why Bell was not in jail.
Members of the APD Homicide Unit later went to Tompkin's campsite where they found seven handguns, ammunition and a concealed handgun manual.
Police recovered the gun used is Bell's death.
The trial's sentencing phase is expected to continue into Friday.
